Reading a tire size
How do I find my tire size?
It is moulded into the sidewall of the tire, in a code like 225/65R17. The same size is printed on the placard inside the driver's door jamb, which lists what the vehicle came with.
What do the three numbers mean?
The first is the width in millimetres, the second is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, and the last is the rim diameter in inches. The R between them means radial.
How much bigger can I go?
The usual rule is to stay within 3% of the original overall height. Beyond that the speedometer reads noticeably off, and taller or wider tires may rub. Each size page lists the swaps that stay inside 3%.
